For all stainless steel balustrade installations, you should consider what grade of steel is being offered and the railing requirements of the project:

  1. Stainless steel balustrade material grade – we offer 316L for all USA products. A lot of importers and distributors are using 304 or series 200. Both of these grades have limitations – for coastal areas or city corrosion levels. And in the series 200 most of the material is ungraded or unstable as a alloy.

  2. Budget for the steel balustrade project being executed, You must consider total cost to include stainless steel railing components, glass and installation costs. If this is a unique project companies like Stainless Design can also include a project and prototype to define better the balustrade system necessary.

  3. The Usage area of the steel balustrade and if its residential or commercial. In areas where there is a view or need for light glass should be incorporated in the balustrade. If the project is residential or commercial, there are different stress and safety considerations for the guard railing.

  4. Finishing aspects of the Steel balustrade are critical to the look and feel of the product. Polished or brushed are the 2 main finishing’s considered, depending on the usage foreseen. In high frequency usage the railing should be finished in brushed as polished material requires daily regular cleaning to look good. While in areas exposed to high corrosion, up to 200 meters from the sea, coastal steel balustrade installations should be finished in the highest grade stainless steel (316L as per all our products supplied to the USA) and mirror finish if possible – to avoid corrosion.

  5. Glass type necessary for the balustrade project is determined again by residential or commercial finality. Up to 10mm is sufficient for railing in residential projects. 12mm to 20mm glass is necessary for commercial railing projects. Clear, reflective, fire-proof, toughened, laminated or colored glass are all options to be considered for your steel balustrade.

  6. Fixing agents and mounting components are probably the most overlooked aspects of a balustrade installation. But are key to specifying how we mount the railing and stability of the installation. We prefer chemical bonded mounts in all cases with a good quality epoxy resin glue.
